Choosing a Hot Water Heater

th6CRE7H12Water heaters are one of the most important components in our homes, both for our convenience and health. Washing dishes by hand or in a dishwasher, manual clothes, washing or using a washing machine, and luxurious hot baths and showers mark a relaxing end to a stressful day. Here are four types of water heaters from which to choose:

The standard tank water heater is generally what we think of when looking at water heaters. The tall white or silver-looking cylinder often sits in a laundry room or basement. Modern models are much more efficient than in years past and it is relatively easy to install and maintain. They are the least expensive water heaters available on the market.

A hybrid water heater with heat pump attached is another option. It is very efficient, has the less costly hot water and power bills are not as high. If there is no drain located where this water heater will be placed, you will need a condensate pump. Due to the fan, this water heater is noisier and it costs more to purchase than a standard water heater.

A tankless water heater is a much smaller unit and takes up very little space. It is extremely efficient since it only heats water as it is needed. There are electric and gas models but gas models are better for higher hot water usage. These hot water heaters are more expensive.

Solar water heaters are not terribly practical in the Seattle area. They are more popular in warmer Southern climates with a lot of bright sunshine to use for power. These units typically supplement a regular water heater and are very expensive. Rebates are offered when purchasing.
