A boiler is sometimes known as a hot water heater; but it can be much more than that. A boiler can be used to create steam heat; at one time, it was even used to drive generators to run machinery – and could still be used for that. However, steam power still requires some sort of heat source to create the steam. Heated water builds up steam pressure inside a tank, and that means that your boiler – regardless of whether it is simply used as a hot water heater or if it is used as heat or a source of power – needs to be kept in good repair. James Watt is said to have gotten the idea for adding a cooling chamber to a steam boiler system so that on one side the steam would be cooling, while heating on the other. It is believed that he got the idea from the way a tea kettle, even though the lid is fitting on tightly, still allows enough steam to escape through the spout to keep the kettle from exploding. Safety valves on your boiler work in much the same way.
